Salesforce provides many types of licenses and Salesforce has many editions of account. People(Client) choose their account edition and licenses according to their use.

Means client purchases their org, and they share credential with us for development.
All editions have some cost. It varies according to the licenses. However, developer edition is free of charge. Yup, you heard it right. Salesforce provides us developer edition to learn the salesforce concepts. Let’s see how it works and all. So, what you are thinking, why the client goes for other editions. When we have access to a free edition, so, wait, I will clear your confusion. Actually, developer edition is limited in the sense of license and size. Developer edition has limited size and license to use. Salesforce provides this edition only for learning purpose. So, we also create our account in the developer edition; otherwise, we need to purchase it. Salesforce gives a trial version for 14 days of other editions. You will get this type of UI. You need to fill some details and verify your account with your email address when you click on the SignUp button. You will receive verification link on your email id which you had filled before. Wohhh! So, now you have your own salesforce Org. It was easy.
